Looking to save energy? Trying to gain speed and torque control? Wishing you could control your starting current? Variable speed or frequency drives can do just that and more. Drive prices keep coming down and their reliability keeps improving.
Unless you run your motors at full speed all the time, variable speed drives (VSD) may be something you should look into purchasing.
Other benefits of a VSD include:
- Reduces power line disturbances which eliminates voltage sags
- Controls stops which reduces mechanical wear and breakage
- Adjusts operating speed which can optimize the process

Does it seem like your maintenance staff is constantly putting out “fires?” Or that your production equipment is always running to failure requiring industrial electronics repair and causing unplanned work stoppages?
Lean manufacturing may be the answer. Lean manufacturing concepts aren’t new but they are gaining momentum…and for good reason.

I am always interested in understanding where our customers are coming from. Two things I hear a lot are “skilled workers shortage” and needing to “produce more with less money”. Today’s tips are for helping you “do more with less”. No matter what your role at the plant, you are expected to look for ways to squeeze more out of poor old Abe. One way most plants can save is by reducing their energy costs:
- Use variable-speed drives on motors serving variable loads. (for more on this see this previous post on variable speed drives) When the motor is under a lighter load, they slow the motor down to reduce power consumption.

In case you missed it, Swiss-based ABB will acquire Baldor Electric Company beginning December 2010 in an all-cash deal. The $4.2 billion deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011.
Why? For ABB, this transaction fills in a gap in ABB’s automation offerings by folding in Baldor’s successful NEMA motor line and will better position the company as a major player in the industrial motor market, including high-efficiency motors. It will also bump up ABB’s mechanical power transmission business and will significantly broaden ABB’s access to North American industrial customers.

Plant safety, work site safety, worker safety - it seems we are hearing this daily now from plant engineers around the country. It would appear that a cultural shift is in the wind and that safety attitudes and practices are changing – for the better. There is a realization that a safe working environment is beneficial not only to employees but to the bottom line.
The concern is there on the part of many CEO’s and managers but the question they often have is, “Where do we start?” You can start by thinking outside the OSHA box. Assuming you have already met the minimum OSHA standards, do a hazard assessment. Look at past history, look at insurance forms, reports on injuries, where have the injuries and illnesses taken place, ask your employees what could be done better.
